How Does a Broken Checkout Silently Kill ConversionsUpdated 6 days ago

A broken checkout does not always mean a crash or an error message. Most checkout problems are quieter — small friction points that make buyers hesitate just long enough to abandon instead of complete.

The most damaging checkout problems are often invisible to the store owner because they never experience checkout the way a buyer does. They are logged in as admin and the experience is different. They test on their own phone and the problem only appears on certain devices.

Checkout issues I find most frequently during audits:

  • No guest checkout — forcing account creation before purchase reliably loses buyers at the final step
  • Missing payment methods — buyers who cannot pay their preferred way leave rather than switching
  • Unexpected shipping costs appearing only at checkout — buyers feel misled and abandon
  • Form fields behaving incorrectly on mobile keyboards
  • Accelerated checkout options missing or not functioning correctly

Every one of these prevents a buyer who was already sold on the product from completing their purchase. They do not report the problem. They just disappear.

Fixing checkout friction is one of the highest-return activities in ecommerce. The buyers who reach checkout are already convinced. The only thing stopping them is the checkout experience itself — and that is entirely fixable.
