How Does Image Alt Text Help My Store Get Found on GoogleUpdated 5 days ago

Alt text is the written description added to every image on a Shopify store. It serves two distinct purposes — both of which directly contribute to search visibility and store quality.

The first purpose is accessibility. Alt text describes images for visitors using screen readers — software that reads website content aloud for people with visual impairments. An image without alt text is invisible to those visitors. This is both an ethical responsibility and a legal requirement in many markets.

The second purpose is SEO. Search engines cannot see images — they read alt text to understand what each image shows.

A product image with descriptive keyword-relevant alt text contributes to:

  • The product page's relevance signal for related search queries
  • The store's visibility in Google Image Search — a significant traffic source for visual product categories like home decor, fashion, beauty and gifting
  • The overall keyword context of the product page it appears on

What I write for each image during the SEO setup:

Alt text that accurately describes the image using natural language — "ceramic blue coffee mug with handle in a warm kitchen setting" rather than "product image 1" or a keyword-stuffed string that reads unnaturally and undermines rather than supports the SEO effort.

Alt text gets written for every product image across the store as part of the full setup service — no images left undescribed.
