How Is the WhatsApp Opt-In Added at My Checkout PageUpdated 5 days ago
The WhatsApp opt-in at checkout is the mechanism through which buyers consent to receive WhatsApp messages from the store — converting every completing buyer into a potential WhatsApp contact compliantly.
WhatsApp's business messaging policies require explicit consent before any message is sent. The checkout is the most natural and highest-converting placement — it appears when the buyer is already engaged and completing a transaction.
How the opt-in works:
A checkbox is added to the Shopify checkout near the phone number field. The language is clear and specific — something like "Send me order updates on WhatsApp." The buyer knows exactly what they are agreeing to.
The checkbox is unchecked by default — the buyer must actively opt in. This is both a policy requirement and the right approach for building a list of contacts who are genuinely expecting messages.
When a buyer ticks the checkbox and completes their purchase:
- Their phone number and consent status are recorded
- The contact is added to the WhatsApp Business messaging list
- The Order Confirmation fires immediately
Buyers who do not tick the checkbox receive no WhatsApp messages — their order processes identically without the automation sequence.
I configure and test the complete opt-in mechanism as part of the setup before the first order goes live.
