Informational vs Buying Keywords — What Is the DifferenceUpdated 5 days ago
Not all keywords signal the same intent. Understanding the difference between informational and buying keywords is what separates a content plan that generates revenue from one that generates traffic without commercial return.
An informational keyword is searched by someone who wants to learn. They are not ready to buy — they are researching, comparing or building understanding. Example: "what is the difference between ceramic and stoneware."
A buying keyword is searched by someone close to purchasing or actively choosing where to buy. Example: "best handmade ceramic mugs online" or "buy ceramic mug with large handle."
How I use both types in the content plan:
Informational keywords build trust and establish expertise:
- They attract buyers in the early research stage before purchase intent has formed
- They introduce the brand as a credible knowledge source
- They keep readers in the store's ecosystem through internal links to product pages
Buying keywords drive direct purchase consideration:
- Used for product comparisons, buying guides and direct product introductions
- They reach buyers who already want the product category and are choosing where to buy
Including both types serves the full buyer journey — meeting buyers at every stage from initial awareness through to the moment they are ready to purchase.
