What Is a Competitor Keyword Gap and How Is It UsedUpdated 2 months ago
A competitor keyword gap is the set of keywords competitors currently rank for in Google that the store does not. Identifying this gap reveals the organic search territory the store could be capturing but is currently missing entirely.
Here is how the analysis works within this service:
I identify two to three competitors with an established SEO presence in the product category.
I review the keywords those stores rank for that are relevant to the buyer journey for this specific product.
I then compare that list against the keywords the client store currently ranks for:
- Keywords competitors rank for but the store does not represent the gap
- These represent real search demand currently going to competitors rather than to the store
From the gap I identify the most valuable opportunities:
- Keywords with meaningful search volume and buyer intent
- Keywords with achievable difficulty for the store's current SEO stage
- Keywords the 90-day content plan can realistically target and begin ranking for
The competitor gap analysis is not about copying competitors. It is about understanding where real organic opportunity exists in the category and making deliberate decisions about which part of that opportunity to pursue first with the available content resources.
