What Is a Product Feed and How Does Its Quality Affect SalesUpdated 5 days ago

A product feed is the structured data file that sends the store's product information to Google Merchant Center — communicating what each product is, what it costs and what it looks like in the format Google's system uses to match products to buyer searches.

The quality of the product feed directly determines Shopping performance — because the feed is the source of everything Google uses to decide when and to whom to show each product.

What product feed quality means in practice:

Product titles — the most important field. Google matches titles against search queries. "Blue Mug" competes for very few searches. "Handmade Blue Ceramic Coffee Mug 350ml for Espresso" matches the specific terms buyers actually search for and earns significantly more relevant impressions.

Product descriptions — additional keyword context that helps Google understand the product beyond the title alone.

Product images:

  • The main image is the image that appears in the Shopping ad
  • A high-quality image on a clean background earns more clicks at the same impression count
  • Low-quality or incorrectly sized images get rejected by Google entirely

Product attributes — category, brand, GTIN, color, size and material. Products with complete attributes are eligible for more Shopping placements than products with missing fields.

I optimize the product feed during setup to maximize Shopping visibility and click-through rate for every product in the store.
