What Is a Referral Link and How Does Every Customer Get OneUpdated 5 days ago
A referral link is a unique web address assigned to every buyer after their first purchase — containing a code that identifies them as the referrer when someone they share it with clicks through and purchases.
Here is how the referral link works:
The link is generated automatically for each buyer after purchase is completed. It is their personal store link — the same store address with their unique referral code appended. They can share it through any channel: a message to a friend, a social media post, a caption or a comment anywhere they choose.
When someone clicks the referral link:
- A cookie is stored in their browser identifying the referrer
- The referred visitor browses and purchases normally
- If they complete a purchase within the tracking window (typically 30 days), the original buyer is credited with the referral
The original buyer earns a reward — either a points addition, store credit or a direct reward depending on the program configuration.
The referred buyer can also receive a benefit for using the link — a welcome reward that makes the first purchase more compelling. This double-sided structure consistently outperforms single-sided referrals in both enrollment and conversion rate.
I configure the link generation, cookie tracking window, reward structure and double-sided incentive as part of the service setup.
