What Is a WhatsApp Template and Why Does It Need ApprovalUpdated 7 days ago
A WhatsApp template is a pre-approved message format that must be reviewed by Meta before it can be sent as a broadcast.
This requirement exists because WhatsApp maintains strict controls on business messages to prevent spam and protect the channel's value. Only approved templates can be sent as outbound broadcasts — unapproved messages get blocked before delivery.
Here is how the approval process works:
The template gets written with the structure WhatsApp requires — a defined opening, body with optional personalization variables and a clear call to action.
The template is submitted through the WhatsApp Business API for review. Approval typically takes between a few minutes and 24 hours depending on the content.
Templates are reviewed against Meta's policies:
- No misleading claims or excessively promotional language
- No violations of WhatsApp's commerce guidelines
- Clear opt-out instructions included
After approval the template can be used indefinitely — no re-approval unless the content changes.
I manage the entire submission and approval process as part of this service. If a template is rejected I revise and resubmit it until an approved version is ready — the approval process never delays the broadcast calendar.
