What Is an Abandoned Cart Flow and How Does It Recover SalesUpdated 7 days ago

An abandoned cart flow is the automated email sequence sent to buyers who added products to the Shopify store cart but left before completing the checkout. It is one of the highest-return automated flows in ecommerce because it reaches buyers who were already close to purchasing.

Around 70 percent of buyers who add to cart do not complete the purchase. A meaningful portion were simply interrupted — they got a call, had to put the phone down or decided to wait until a better moment. The abandoned cart flow reaches them when they are back.

Here is what the flow I build covers:

Email one — sent within one hour of abandonment. Friendly and non-pushy, it shows the cart contents and makes returning a single click. No pressure.

Email two — sent 24 hours later if no purchase occurred:

  • Adds social proof — reviews from buyers who purchased the same product
  • Addresses the most common objections that stop buyers from completing checkout

Email three — sent 48 hours after email two. The final recovery attempt — direct and clear, with a strong invitation to complete the purchase.

No discount is offered in any of the three emails. Recovery happens through timing, social proof and convenience — not by reducing the product's perceived value or training buyers to abandon carts expecting an offer.
