What Is Frequently Bought Together and How Does It WorkUpdated 5 days ago
A Frequently Bought Together section is a product page element that shows the item being viewed alongside two or three products most commonly purchased together — creating a visual bundle the buyer can add with a single action rather than browsing for complementary items separately.
The section works on the same principle as Amazon's equivalent feature: when a buyer sees that other buyers consistently purchased these products together, the combination feels validated and the case for adding all of them becomes significantly stronger than it would if each product were encountered in isolation.
Here is how I build the Frequently Bought Together section:
Product pairing research — identifying which specific products are most logically or commonly purchased together. Based on purchase data where it exists and on logical complementarity where it does not.
Section placement — added below the product description on every product page with relevant pairings. Positioned so the buyer's first decision is always the primary product.
Bundle pricing display:
- Shows the combined price of all items together
- Shows the saving compared to purchasing each item individually where a bundle discount applies
- Includes individual selection options so the buyer can choose which additional items to include
The section creates a Frequently Bought Together network across the full product catalog — where every relevant product becomes an entry point for a higher-value order without requiring the buyer to navigate elsewhere.
